In the city of Smryna, David Ayin, the second son of the king of Soteria, is once again rejected by his family. After receiving news that a monstrous enemy has assassinated his estranged family, he fears for his own life. He is told to go into hiding but the only living relative he has is a young girl he rescued from his aunt’s cruelty years ago, and he can’t leave her behind. Joan has lived in Smyrna as far back as she can remember. But memories of her entire childhood have been erased. All she knows is she’s an assassin, a knife. But more than anything she wants to escape life in the underworld of Smryna and find her past and who she really is. Her handlers, however, want her to complete one last hit before granting her freedom -killing the prince. David is enamored with Joan and sneaks out to tell, his “girlfriend”,  about his family before leaving Smyrna. Seeing her opportunity, she poisons him but fails to kill him. With both human and supernatural help David’s escape amid another attack on his life. He is a man on the run. But with word that his cousin is being held prisoner, he must do something to rescue her even as his enemies hunt him.

Joan thinks her mission is done. But, when meeting with one of her handlers, Crimson, she is forced to face The Sisterhood, the half-human hybrids that run the underworld. She discovers that David is still alive and she now has been poisoned. With The Sisterhood dangling the antidote in front of her, Joan has a choice: complete the job or face a fate worse than death. 

Danger looms at every turn, will Joan and David succumb to the evil forces surrounding them or rescue what remains of their shattered lives and homeland?
